High Speed Doors

The traditional description of a "high speed door’ in the industrial and commercial world refers to a fabric roller door capable of opening and closing very fast (A fast action door). The purpose of the door is to keep the building at the most consistent temperature as possible whilst also keeping out dust and contaminates, such as insects, etc..
A high speed fabric door used on the external walls of any building also requires a secondary door system for security when the building is not in use and most high speed doors sit in front or behind a steel roller door but they can sit with other door types as well.

Used internally the high speed door is more likely to be used for segregating areas or rooms within the building for temperature control again. High speed doors are used a lot in the food industry and cold storage warehouses and factories.
Insulated High Speed Doors
With modern technology advances it is now possible to have a high speed roller type door which is also secure and insulated too. Double skinned, foam filled steel panels rolling up inside a non contact spiral tracking system provide an excellent solution in one door system.
Take a look at the Hormann 6030 spiral door for an example of such a system.

“High speed doors”

One of the main subjects we find comes up regularly these day is the speed of the industrial door as so many cheap steel roller shutter doors o the UK market operate at such slow speeds it affects the efficiency of operatives and vehicle traffic in and out and around the building and also means the door is left open most of the time because it is too time consuming to stand and close it completely.
With modern technology it is now perfectly possible to have what could be described as a fairly standard steel or aluminium industrial roller shutter door but specified with a high speed, high usage electric motor drive unit. The upshot is a roller door capable of opening a lot faster than a totally standard motor drive unit, which in effect is the difference between 50 seconds and about 20 seconds on a 5 metre high door, less than half the time!!
This higher speed motor drive system doesn’t have to break the bank but it does have to be specified on the right type of roller shutter door system, not one using cheap and inferior components, which will fail under stress. The stress placed on a roller curtain by a powerful high speed motor drive can be great so it is essential the door has been tested with this type of motor.

Another constraint is that steel or aluminium high speed doors will have a soft start and stop mechanism to prevent damage to the curtain and this operates usually in the first 500mm or so of operation so for a fairly short height door the benefits may be slightly dampened by the door being restricted for the first and last 500mm of travel if the door is only 3 metres high. The benefits tend to come for doors over about 4.5m in height.

High speed motors are also possible on other types of doors such as sectional overhead doors.
With more and more industries working 24 hour shifts it is essential a modern warehouse or factory has the most efficient access doors working at the fastest possible rate.
Safety and mechanical longevity should not be the shortfall in any high speed door system so getting the right door is also essential and Samson Doors can help you specify the right door.
