How Do I Measure For A Retractable Security Grille?
All the security grilles we sell are measured by their Overall Width and Overall Height, so it really is just a matter of deciding where the grille is going to be fitted in relation to to the door or window or aperture you are securing.
Any form of fixed or retractable security grille can be installed to the outside face, the inside face or into the reveal of an aperture, but it will affect the size of the overall width and height required.
Reveal Installation
When you are going to install into the reveal of an aperture then this is probably the easiest to work out as all you need to do is measure in several places across the width and height, take the smallest measurement and then take off a little bit of tolerance (say 5mm) depending on how out of square or rough the aperture is and then use these dimensions as the ordering sizes which will refer to the width of the retractable grille with the steel frame and the height including the top and bottom track system.
The gate 'bunch' when the grille is open will then be of course inside the reveal and taking up the space to one side or both sides with a bi parting system as expected. This dimension is normally around 15% of the total ordering width but can be cross referenced in a chart available.
Face Fit Installation
When you are requiring to face fit a retractable security grille, then you have to consider the 'bunch' size in the equation, the size of the grille stack when fully opened. Retractable security grilles are face fitted usually in doorways to ensure the grille does not intrude into the opening at all and in many cases the 'bunch' when opened can sit behind curtains in a domestic situation and not be seen. If there is a threshold such as with many french and patio door sets then fitting behind also can mean the bottom track is placed behind the raised threshold and does not become any more of a trip hazard than before.
If you are fitting to the inside face and have no restrictions to the sides then you need to work out the overall width by adding on the 'bunch' size so for example if your opening width is 1956mm wide then with the bunch size added this would make the overall width required 2400mm to take into account the bunch size and the side supports for locking and fixing frame.
