How Do I Measure and Order a Sectional Garage Door?

All sectional garage door manufacturers use the same methods for ordering with the Width first and the Height second. What you need to measure for has to include the side tracks and headroom for the necessary gear type. A sectional garage door will have several different places for the springing and operating mechanism depending on various factors and each one requires slightly different headroom or internal depth into the garage. The measurements for ordering AND pricing the door is always taken as the internal dimensions of the fixing frame system as shown below for the Hormann sectional garage door. The springs shown on this 'Z track' example are situated at the sides, so the headroom required is minimal at only 100mm for a manual door and 115mm for the inclusion of a boom type electric operator.

Example: A structural opening is measured as 2290mm wide and 2180mm high and there is 220mm on either side on the inside face of the garage and 300mm of headroom. The nearest standard size sectional door for this opening would be a 2286mm x 2125mm ordering size. If this were a Hormann, Carteck, SWS or Garador sectional door then you would have a steel fascia included to install above the 2125mm which is an additional 90mm so the difference between the 2180mm and 2125mm would be catered for. Because the standard door at 2286mm is slightly smaller this would mean you would see 2mm either side of the steel frame legs and all you need to worry about with that is the legs are normally white as standard so if your door colour choice is different you may think it necessary to order coloured profile covers to take care of this. The door however will fit perfectly at these sizes and there is always a huge amount of flexibility in the sizes you can specify for a sectional door in an odd sized openings (most openings won't match the standard sizes of garage doors).

Always remember to take into account the headroom required as well as how far back the tracks will travel along with any electric operator and then also take into account the side leg frame sections for fixing (usually about 85mm either side) So to summarise: Width first and Height second in any ordering size references Order by the internal measurements of the steel framework (i.e. the daylight opening) Be aware of the headroom requirements as they vary from one manufacturer to another.

Don't forget to order an 'in-between fitting kit' if you are installing in-between your structural opening and also think about how you are going to finish the legs and head section as the legs will not be the same colour as the door unless it is white. The ordering dimensions are the same for an industrial sectional door but the framework dimensions are larger as well as far more headroom being required as the springs are larger too. The biggest mistake made all the time is to order or specify any door and forget to include the fixing sub frame and tracking or roll in the case of a roller shutter door. Every type of garage door has some kind of fixing frame and dimensions to be catered for with the mechanism and when a door is ordered by the daylight opening dimensions, this is when this can be forgotten or excluded.
