Protect your property's doors with high quality, bespoke security shutters.

Many security shutters are fitted to protect the front and rear door entrances on commercial and domestic properties. There is a wide choice of shutters for this purpose as they are typically not overly large in size, however be sure to give careful considertation to the specification.

Some Points to Consider

- If the security shutter is on the outside and the door in question is the last point of exit from the building, then it is imperative that there is a manual emergency override fitted in case of a power or motor failure. The same applies to anyone who chooses to use a security shutter to secure a premises with themselves inside. There must be a way of exiting the building in case of power failure. There are several systems with different points of access and each one is specificed accroding to the site requirements.

Operating Security Shutter for Patio Doors- If a security shutter is fitted over a doorway and uses a remote control system, there must be a safety bottom edge detection system incorporated. This simple but essential requirement applies to almost every electric operated shutter, but is especially important over a doorway where people can be present and the shutter can be operated without visual contact. We do not ordinarily recommend that security shutters are remote controlled on commercial premises, more often it is domestic properties that require this functionality. This is most commonly the case when the customer requires a connection with their home automation system.

- A doorway security shutter is nearly always fitted to the face on the outside, but can also be fitted inside if required. It is best to have the side guides and the shutter curtain coming all the way to the ground whenever possible for maximum security.

- It is quite usual to have a door shutter spaced away from the house wall in order to miss protruding handles. Within this process, we can make the curtain miss the door sill and go to the floor level in order to provide maximum resistance to anyone attempting to force the shutter from the bottom sections. Due to their properties, security shutters also provide welcome protection against the wind and rain during the winter, also protecting your door and frame when closed.

- Quite often a doorway will have a window immediately next to the door opening, and in these cases it is usual to have a security shutter the full height of the doorway and covering the window in one large shutter. To try to install two shutter guides right next to each other in this scenario does not normally work as there is not enough room. Even if you were able to, having two shutters is likely to cost more.

- A large number of the security shutters we install are to secure french or patio doors. If the security level requirement is not particularly high, you can look at installing the shutters with a vented interlocking section between each slat as these can be effectively used for heat and temperature control, as well as security. When not quite fully closed, these shutters will enable light to come through but also allow some vision to the outside. When completely closed down, the hundreds of tiny vision holes will disappear and the curtain is solid.

- The SeceuroShield 1500 is a good example of one of these types of shutters, and the curtain is constructed from double skinned aluminium slats with an insulating central foam filled core. These shutters will provide excellent heat and cold insulation, and in many Northern European countries these are used instead of curtains all year round.

- Controlling most domestic security shutters is simple and easy. Once installed, you may use the shutters far more than you initially realise due to the easy operation!

- Higher security shutters for doorways on back entrance doors or commercial exposed premises are usually either extruded aluminium or galvanised steel, but the same applies for all doorways. It is possible to specify additional security for any shutter, whether it is manual or electric. This often includes additional 'bullet-pin' locks or similar devices that place a steel pin through the side channel on one or both sides. These go all the way through the curtain to secure it at a mid-height in addition to whatever locking is used at low or high level. Although this could be a time consuming routine if they are opened and closed every day, it is one of the requirements if more advanced security is needed.

- Ensure that the very bottom slat of the shutter clears the top of the doorway. Every shutter will have a small amount of the bottom slat hanging down when fully open, so ensure you don't make the mistake of not allowing enough clearance. The image below shows one shutter installed slightly higher than the others - this is the doorway shutter requiring a full clearance to open the doors. The same applies to windows unless they are sliding windows.
