How Do I Know Which Security Shutter I Need?

Samson offer a vast range of security shutters for every type of application and there are some simple rules of thumb for choosing the right one.

With any security shutter it is very easy to be mis sold a type of shutter purely based on low price alone and we see many security shutters specified incorrectly and not fit for the purpose intended, simply because when someone asks for a roller shutter for security it is easy to simply sell any of the models without asking what is really required.

What to be aware of when searching?
Incorrect Specifications
One of the first things with any security shutter is to be careful and make sure you understand the control and use of the shutter. We see far too many example of security shutters, all electrically operated, fitted and completely enclosing the ground floor of a building and not have a crucial emergency manual override system fitted to at least the one shutter covering the entry and exit doorway. This seems unbelievable, but we see it fairly regularly. If there were to be a fire inside or a power cut, there is no easy way to get out of the building at night from inside, and this is simply unacceptable in any situation.

Unsafe Specifications
We see security shutters fitted to commercial premises with little thought given to the operation and control, bearing in mind all power operated doors and shutters in a public area should be specified according to a simple risk assessment, and a shutter over a shop front by a public path and highway should only be able to be operated by a person who can see the shutter and understand the risks involved, especially on some of the very large steel shutters seen on some shops. here have been injuries and fatalities involving security shutters before and it is purely down to careless specification and use.

Power Failure Back Up
What about a battery back up system? These are simple enough to install and charge on a trickle charge principal with minimal energy consumption. If you commercial premises relies on 7 days a week and long trading hours the last thing you want is a shutter not working because of a power failure, the mania override system of course should still be used as a final back up if everything fails including maybe even the motor drive system.

Online Purchasing
We ourselves offer online purchasing for most of our security shutters, but we do not expect many people to be fully aware of what it is they need in a security shutter and of course which one is best as there are so many to choose from.
If you need help then simply take some time to get some rough dimensions for each door or window you are looking at securing, think about whether the shutters should be fitted inside, outside or in-between the opening as the roll and box of the curtain has to go somewhere, and this is too easily forgotten. Also think about the operation and who is to operate the shutters in reality, easier in a home situation, but in commercial or industrial premises, which staff are to be in charge of operation?

Level of Security?
Do you need low, medium or high security? This is a harder decision to make as we really don't have a simple system of working this out that covers every persons expectations. We have low security shutters which have a double skinned foam filled slat construction (Seceuroshield 150) and will provide excellent heat and sound insulation and also a fair degree of protection unless reasonably large tools are used to force an entry. We then have a range of thicker slats, either with large and deeper profiles for medium security (Seceuroshield 77 as one example) and maybe even larger openings. The highest security shutters are usually double skinned and extruded in their construction for the thickest and most resistant curtain (Seceuroshield 38 as an example)and maybe even larger openings.
One of the other factors in making the shutters secure is the size andstrength of the side guides used and for most of our model ranges there are always options including several 'Secured by Design' models such as the Seceuroshield 3801 or 7501.
These shutters have been upgraded and tested to a level recognised by an independent test body and therefore will genuinely offer higher levels of security when installed in the correct manner to a suitable surface.
