Industrial and Commercial Door Types

Roller Shutter Door

One of the most versatile and commonly used door types. The roller door is a door that opens and closes vertically with the door curtain rolling up onto a barrel situated at the top of a pair of guides in which the door curtain travels in. A roller door is either lifted using a manual operation with spring and gearing assistance or electrically operated using various single and three phase electric motor drive options.

A roller door curtain can be a continuous sheet of steel or more frequently is a curtain constructed from many small horizontal lath sections. These lath sections can vary from very small, flat faced aluminium sections through to much larger double skinned and foam filled insulated slats. This diversity in the curtain makes the roller door ideal for so many applications, small or large

The roller shutter door is very often confused in architects drawings and references with the sectional overhead door but the differences are great so it is important to be specific.

Ideal for almost any application where there is sufficient headroom internally to accommodate the curtain roll. Materials and motor drive technology means far greater options now available for the door opening speed and the controls and safety on these doors.

Sectional Overhead Door

A door type becoming far more popular as the benefits in the strength, insulation and security of this door type are realised. It is primarily a door made from several horizontal panels, usually about 400 - 600mm high and up to widths of about 10metres.

These panels are double skinned and have an insulation core providing superb insulation values defending on the thickness - anything between 40 and 80mm.

The panels slide up and down in tracks situated at either side which on a normal arrangement will curve at the top of the opening height and then travel horizontal into the building. The panels are perfectly balanced by a large springing system making the operation fairly effortless and giving the option of either manual or electric operation on most models and sizes.

When the sectional door is closed the panels are pushed against a large rubber seal at the back of the tracks in which they travel and this provides a great degree of weather sealing and superb stability in strong winds and driving rain, far more than a roller shutter can usually achieve.

Ideal for any building where insulation is important, and with some of the more modern designs using large sections of glazing, these are an ideal solution for retail environments, such as car showrooms and the like. As long as there is the uninterrupted space available above the door opening the sectional door is always worth investigating.

Folding Door

Folding doors are used in applications where headroom may be limited or for the benefits of partial opening side ways allowing pedestrian access without opening the whole door.

Folding doors, like sectional doors, can be constructed from very well insulated panels with or with our glazing sections and have great strength and integrity.

With minimal intrusion into any building folding doors offer great solutions for so many applications and are more often than not just manually operated. A folding door system will also provide options up to very large widths where other door systems may be prohibitive.

Sliding Door

One of the simplest and trouble free door types and usually a single or double bi parting door system sliding on the outside of any building although can slide inside if required.

Most sliding doors are used as a manual operated door and the door panels are in one complete section, usually in double skinned steel or timber. The sliding door system can be top hung or bottom rolling depending the type and site conditions and they can also go to some very large sizes.

Ideal for farm buildings, warehouses or factories with the option of a pedestrian door built in for frequent pedestrian access. Long lasting with almost no stress on any components during operation.

Round the Corner Door

A door type where several panels joined together vertically will slide along and then turn around a corner to continue into the building. Very much like a folding door system this will offer partial opening for frequent pedestrian access and the panels can be constructed from many different materials to offer steel, aluminium and timber options with or without glazing and different widths of individual panels.

Very large widths can be supplied in this door type as any strain on the materials used is spread out evenly along the door. manual or electric operation is possible for any of the models offered.

Single or bi parting options depending on requirements and side room available.

High Speed Door

A traditional reference to a fabric roller curtain used to control the atmosphere within large warehouse or factory buildings. Traditionally a high speed fabric door is used behind a traditional steel roller door which is opened during operational times and the fabric curtain is kept closed until a fork lift or vehicle needs to pass through. With modern materials and electric motor technology it is now perfectly possible to have a high speed door with a steel or aluminium curtain therefore doing away with the need for 2 doors. High speed doors are also referred to as ‘fast action doors’. Various insulated high speed doors are also now available providing even more benefits for buildings where temperature control is important.

Hinged Doorset

A reference to any door hinged at one side with either a single or double leaf arrangement. Most doorsets in industrial applications are manufactured from steel and are a double skinned construction. The use of the word dorset signifies the inclusion of the sub fixing frame and all necessary hardware which is all usually factory fitted. The use of steel doorstep in modern buildings is far greater than it used to be for the benefits of fire protection, security, sound insulation and other uses.

Aluminium, galvanised steel, stainless steel and timber veneered steel panels are the most commonly used materials.

Rolling Grille

Open vented grilles are simply roller shutter doors where the curtain is manufactured to provide large proportions of ventilation and vision. Used in high street retail security and also in underground building vehicle access these roller grilles are available in steel or aluminium in various shapes and designs. For vehicle access control in large car parks obviously the usage is very high so very robust electric motor and mechanics are used to provide 24 hour use if required.
